Portus gameplay

Build.
Interpret. Endure.

Portus is a contemplative settlement-building game where a place answers back to the choices made within it.

01 / Settle

Read the ground before you build.

Each game begins on a small, generated coastal world of grassland, forest, mountain, sand, river, sea, and resource deposits. Buildings can only be placed where their terrain, space, and nearby conditions allow.

Homes, production buildings, quarries, services, infrastructure, knowledge buildings, trade, storage, and other kinds of work turn an empty map into a settlement with its own shape and rhythm.

02 / Sustain

Make a living economy.

Wood, stone, food, and gold are the core resources. Construction costs, production, consumption, worker needs, and capacity make placement a continuing decision rather than a one-time act.

Research is the planned side of progress: it unlocks capabilities and improves the settlement over time. It rewards preparation and patient investment.

03 / Attend

Notice what the world is saying.

Time moves through days and seasons. Warnings draw attention to resource, environmental, favour, and disaster conditions before they become harder to ignore. Disasters create localized disturbances with recovery paths, rather than arbitrary punishment.

Favour is different from research. It is relational and reactive: offerings, rituals, Twilight, and the changing state of the settlement shape its influence. It can reveal opportunity as well as risk.

04 / Remember

Let the settlement become a story.

The Codex records lore encountered through play. Discoveries, changing seasons, unusual choices, and the aftermath of events give the world a memory beyond the resource ledger.
